Keeping your pet active is just as important as feeding them the right food or keeping up with their vet visits. Regular exercise helps with weight control, joint health, and even boredom. The challenge? Finding activities that fit your pet’s lifestyle, especially if they spend their time indoors or when Arizona’s heat makes outdoor play tricky.

Here are some fun ways to keep your pet moving all year long, indoors and outside.

Why Exercise Matters for Pets

Exercise is about more than just burning energy. It helps your pet:

Manage a healthy weight

Build strong muscles and joints

Release pent-up energy ( which helps prevent chewing or late-night zoomies)

Strengthen their bond with you

And just like us, pets that don’t get enough activity are more likely to struggle with weight gain, arthritis, or anxiety.

Indoor Exercise Ideas for Cats and Dogs

When it’s too hot or stormy to go outside—something we know all too well in Arizona—there are still plenty of ways to keep pets moving indoors.

Treat Toys
Lick mats, treat puzzles, and food-dispensing toys keep pets busy, encourage problem-solving, and make them work for their snacks.

Indoor Games
Hallway fetch works especially well for smaller dogs with big energy.

Obstacle Courses
Setting up an obstacle course with cushions, perches, tunnels, or chairs give both dogs and cats something new to figure out.

Interactive Play
Pets love getting attention! Things like wand toys for cats and tug-of-war ropes for dogs help pets burn energy, and the interactive play strengthens your connection.

Training and tricks
Turn indoor time into learning time. It will provide mental stimulation, and most pets love the rewards that come with training.

Outdoor Exercise Ideas for Dogs and Cats

When the weather is safe and cool enough, outdoor time offers pets a change of scenery and plenty of mental stimulation. A few ways to get moving include:

Walking
Try to go in the early morning or later in the evening to avoid scorching hot pavement and heat stress. Cats can go for walks, too. You can try a leash and harness to let your cat explore, or carry them in a special screened backpack.

Hiking
Exploring Arizona’s pet-friendly trails can be a great weekend activity, as long as you bring extra water and stick to shaded paths.

Swimming
Playing in a pool (while supervised) or even splashing in a shallow kiddie pool can give dogs a low-impact workout.

Games
Backyard games like fetch, frisbee, or hide-and-seek help tire active dogs out before bedtime.

Catios
Exercising their curiosity is the best way to get cats to move around. If you have the space, you can build or buy a “catio” where your cat can climb around and enjoy some outdoor sights and smells.

How to Keep Your Pet Active and Happy

Exercise should be fun for both of you, not another chore.

Whether it’s a short game of fetch in the hallway or a weekend hike on a cool morning, the important thing is consistency. Every bit of movement helps your pet stay healthy, happy, and more comfortable at home and as they age. Even a few minutes here and there make a difference if you build it into their daily routine.

And always remember to check with your veterinarian before you begin an exercise program, to make sure your pet is physically ready.

If you’re not sure what types of exercise are safe for your pet, or you’ve noticed changes in their activity level, contact us. At Anasazi Animal Clinic, we’ll help you build an exercise plan that fits your pet’s needs so you can enjoy many more active years together.

If you resolved to get more exercise this year, trying out new hiking trails is a great way to stick to your goals. Long walks are also a great way to help your dog stay fit and healthy—besides the exercise, they also get to smell new things and satisfy their need to explore. Fortunately, there are a lot of dog-friendly hiking trails in Gilbert and nearby where you can both enjoy the great outdoors together. Here are three of our favorite places for hiking with our dogs.

Three Dog-Friendly Hiking Areas in Gilbert

1. Riparian Preserve

If you live in Gilbert, you’re lucky, because you have the Riparian Preserve right on your doorstep. This wildlife sanctuary in the wetlands has a network of trails connecting its seven ponds, with endless opportunities to explore. The trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk. Dogs must be leashed, and of course, all waste must be carried out.

2. Arizona Canal Path

If wilderness hikes are not your style, try out the Arizona Canal Path that connects Glendale, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. Many sections of the trail are paved, so it’s easy for beginners. And there’s a lot to see, from public art and shopping in Scottsdale to scenic views of bridges and waterways all along the 18-mile canal. Trails are open year-round, and dogs must be leashed at all times.

3. Quail Run Park

If your dog needs more exercise than you do, there are plenty of dog parks in the area as well. Since Cosmo Dog Park will be closed for maintenance until the end of July, try out Quail Run Park in Mesa. There’s a huge off-leash area for dogs who have energy to burn, and plenty of room for leashed walks, as well in this 40-acre green space. The park is open from 6am to 10pm daily, but the dog run is closed on Thursdays and from 12-1 every day for cleaning.

Your Local Vet in Gilbert

Where are your favorite dog-friendly trails in the Gilbert area? Hiking is a great way for you and your dog to stay fit, and winter is one of the best times to get outside and enjoy the Arizona sunshine. It’s also a good time to schedule your pet’s annual exam. Before you hit the trails, you’ll want to make sure your dog is up-to-date on their vaccinations and ready for adventure. Contact Anasazi Animal Clinic to make an appointment today, and be sure to tell us about your best hikes!

What do cats need to be happy? Cuddles? Extra brushing? Lots of catnip? Wet food all day long? It’s not always easy to understand what a cat wants, but as long as you provide the basics, your cat should be happy. Every cat needs food, exercise, and veterinary care to be healthy. They also need to satisfy their instincts for hunting, climbing, and scratching. Here are ten things you can do to keep your cat purring.

Ten Things Every Indoor Cat Needs

1: Interactive Play

Cats are hard-wired hunters, and even indoor cats need to engage in hunting behaviors like stalking, pouncing, and biting. When your kitty pounces your ankles, it’s because they want to play. Cats love to test their athletic skills on unpredictable targets, so when you wriggle a toy erratically, or toss it in a random direction, your cat gets excited about the new challenge. Plus, interactive play helps you build a closer bond.

2: Entertainment

Cats are pretty good at finding their own entertainment. Whether it’s batting a piece of trash around the house, bird-watching, or testing out cardboard boxes, cats can usually find the mental stimulation they need to keep from getting bored. However, if your cat is acting out by destroying your furniture or chomping on your houseplants, they might need more stimulation and time spent playing. Try adding some new toys into their rotation and get a plant just for your cat, like wheatgrass, to help prevent boredom.

3: Comfortable Beds

Even if their favorite place to sleep is on your bed, every cat needs a comfortable bed of their own. When they’re young, they’ll sleep most anywhere—on a pile of freshly folded laundry, on your bath mat, or curled up on a couch pillow. But when cats get older, it’s not so easy for them to jump up onto your bed or the couch. Make sure your cat has a clean, safe, comfortable place to sleep that’s also easy for them to access.

4: A Place to Perch

Every cat needs a place to perch up high, for several reasons. Cats feel safe when they’re up where no one can reach them. A high perch also gives them an opportunity to survey their territory and keep an eye on the activity of the household. If there are other pets around, a high perch will let cats assert their dominance, or simply take a nap undisturbed. Add a weight-bearing shelf or a cat-tree.

5: Somewhere to Scratch

Cats use scratching to keep their claws healthy, to express excitement, and to mark their territory with the scent glands in their paws. They’re not usually trying to be destructive when they sink their claws into the back of the couch—it’s a normal, instinctual behavior. However, sometimes cats do get destructive when they’re feeling stressed out. It’s their way of letting you know they need attention.

6: Grooming

Although they’re known to be meticulous self-groomers, combing and brushing is good for your cat’s health and happiness. When cats form a bond they groom each other, so when you brush your cat’s fur, you’re demonstrating how much you love them. Plus, the more loose fur you can collect on a brush or comb means the less fur your cat might end up swallowing. To help prevent hairballs, regular grooming is a must.

7: A Nutritious Diet

Whether it’s wet food or dry, your cat’s food should be high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Most commercial cat foods are formulated to provide the high-protein, high-fat diets cats need. As long as you’re feeding your cat the right amount of food, and making sure they get enough exercise, they should be able to maintain a healthy weight.

8: Daily Exercise

Even if it seems like they spend most of the day sleeping, cats do need exercise. Daily exercise keeps their joints and muscles healthy, and helps prevent obesity. It also provides some of the entertainment and interactive play that cats need to satisfy their hunting instincts.

9: A Clean Litter Box

Try to get into the habit of scooping your cat’s litter box every day—this will make your cat both happier and healthier. Cats like to be clean, and none of them want to have to step on clumps of their own waste. Litter boxes can also harbor parasites, bacteria, and viruses if they don’t get cleaned. Daily scooping will help prevent urinary tract infections and keep germs from getting tracked around your house.

10: Veterinary Care

Every cat needs a yearly checkup to make sure they’re in good health and up to date on all their vaccinations. Cats also need yearly dental exams to check for signs of gum disease and tooth decay. A healthy cat is a happy cat, so it’s important to keep up with your pet’s veterinary care.

Have you ever seen someone trip over their dog’s leash because they’re staring at their phone? Or seen someone so deep in conversation that they tug their dog along when they haven’t finished pooping yet? Don’t be that guy! Distracted dog walking is not only dangerous, it’s unfair to your pet. Here’s why you should keep your phone in your pocket when you’re out for a walk.

So I’m on My Phone—What’s the Worst That Could Happen?

If you’re distracted by your phone, you might not see danger approaching, like a truck that’s running a stop sign, or an aggressive off-leash dog running toward you. Or your pet might eat something gross they found on the sidewalk, and the next thing you know, you’re cleaning up dog diarrhea in your living room.

If you’re not watching where you’re going, you might stumble off a curb or walk straight into a dumpster and hurt yourself. Or your dog might see a squirrel and leap after it so vigorously that you lose your grip on the leash and they dart across a busy road. Or they might lunge into the path of a passing bicyclist, tangling their leash in the chain and causing an accident that harms the cyclist, you, and your pet, too.

Accidents can happen at any time, but they’re even more likely if you aren’t paying attention to your surroundings. So stay alert! Keeping your phone in your pocket and your hands on the leash will keep you and your dog safe when you’re out for a walk.

If You’re on Your Phone, You’re Not Paying Attention to Your Pet, Either

Dogs don’t go for walks just so they can poop and pee outside. They also need the mental and social stimulation that walks provide. Even if it doesn’t make sense to you, your dog actually needs to spend five minutes sniffing that tree or stopping to pee every ten paces. So don’t rush them—letting your dog set the pace will ensure that they get the physical exercise they need and help prevent boredom at home.

When you’re multitasking during a walk, you might even miss the signs that your dog is uncomfortable. If they’re too hot or too cold, if they’re getting tired, or if they stepped on a thorn, you won’t notice if you’re on your phone. Paying attention to your dog’s signals during a walk will help you prevent minor injuries like burned paw pads in the summer or ice between their toes in the winter.

If you’re on your phone during your walks, you’re also missing out on training opportunities. Whether you’re trying to teach your dog to walk on a leash without pulling, or to stop and sit at intersections, consistency is very important. Your dog knows when you’re not paying attention, and will be less likely to obey your commands if you’re on your phone. You’re also missing out on those valuable one-on-one interactions that your pet craves, so be sure to give them your undivided attention.

Dog Walking Tips: How to Walk Your Dog Safely

Always keep your dog on a leash and obey the leash laws in your area.

Let your pet set the pace. Pay attention to their cues so you know when they’ve had enough.

Bring treats to reward good behavior or reinforce training exercises.

Pay close attention to your surroundings, especially to vehicles, children, and other dogs.

Keep your phone in your pocket! It’s okay to keep it handy for cute photos or emergencies, but don’t get distracted by text messages or social media.

If you’re not already taking your pup for regular walks, now is a good time to start a new habit. Walking your dog is a great way to ensure they get the exercise they need to stay healthy. But how often should you walk your dog? And how long should each walk be?

The answer is different for every dog, because how often and how long your dog needs to walk depends on several different factors. At Anasazi Animal Clinic, we want to help you make sure your dog is getting the right amount of exercise. We put together this guide to dog walking to help you keep your dog happy and healthy.

How Often and How Long to Walk Your Dog

Getting the right amount of daily exercise helps dogs maintain a healthy weight and healthy joints, and also prevents boredom and loneliness. But every dog has different needs when it comes to walks. Age and breed are the main factors to consider when determining how often your dog needs to go for a walk, and how long each walk should be.

How old is your dog?

Puppies have lots of energy and need frequent bathroom breaks, so you’ll need to walk them several times a day. A short, 10-minute walk three times each day is ideal for puppies. Before you start taking them for walks, however, it’s important that you leash-train your puppy first. They should also be up-to-date on their vaccinations to keep them safe in case they encounter any other dogs during your walk.

Adult dogs that are in good shape should be walked for 30 minutes to an hour each day, depending on their energy levels. If you have a busy schedule, you can break up your daily walk into multiple 10-minute or 15-minute walks each day.

If your adult dog is out of shape, it’s best to start by taking them on one 10-minute walk each day. You can slowly increase the length of your walks over time as your dog becomes more used to the exercise. However, if your dog has any underlying health issues, it’s best to speak with your vet about what type of exercise your dog can handle.

If your senior dog can still get around easily, they should also be going on walks. Frequent movement helps stimulate their minds, improve their strength, and promote good health as your dog ages. Senior dogs that are already fit and active can walk up to 30 minutes per day, but may need to walk at a slower pace and for shorter intervals throughout the day.

Which breed (or mix of breeds) is your dog?

Some breeds are more active than others, and they will need more frequent walks. For example, small dog breeds like chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and miniature pinschers need at least a 30-minute walk each day. Large dog breeds, like saint bernards, labrador retrievers, and german shepherds may need to walk (or run!) for an hour or more each day.

However, size isn’t the only factor in determining the length your walks should be according to your dog’s breed. For instance, dogs with short snouts like pugs and bulldogs often struggle with breathing, so they will only be able to handle short walks. Calm dog breeds like Portuguese water dogs and Irish setters aren’t as energetic, so they don’t need to go on walks as often as other dogs of the same size.

Tips for Walking Your Dog

Follow these tips to ensure you and your dog have a fun, comfortable walk every time:

Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise to encourage good behavior when interacting with other people and dogs on the walk.

Avoid wearing out your dog by walking at a casual pace.

Limit time on asphalt and concrete, especially in the hot summer, to protect their paws.

Stick to a routine—walk your dog at the same time every day in the same places.

Bring a bottle of water to prevent you and your dog from becoming dehydrated.

Get your dog microchipped in case you get separated on a walk.

Don’t forget to pick up after your dog!

How Do You Know if You’re Walking Your Dog Too Much?

You may be overdoing it on your walks if your dog:

Slows down

Stops or lays down and refuses to move

Starts limping

Has trouble navigating curbs

Appears sore or stiff even hours later or the day after the walk

If your dog continues to show these signs after resting for a couple of days, consult your vet to determine if an injury might be the cause.

It’s Springtime in Gilbert, which means things are heating up! Everyone knows Arizona Summer temperatures are no joke, but springtime is hot in this part of the country as well. Our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic encourages you to have some safe springtime fun with your pet. The high and dry heat of Arizona can be dangerous for your pets, so it’s important to find safe (and socially-distanced) ways to play safely outside. Keep reading for some great ideas on socially-distanced pet activities this spring!

1. Take A Trip To The Lake

Check out the beautiful lakes Arizona has to offer—such as Canyon Lake, Lake Pleasant, or Apache Lake. Perhaps you and your furry companion can take a boat trip. A boat ride is a wonderful way to enjoy the spring sunshine while maintaining social distancing. Be sure to take plenty of drinking water aboard, and it’s a good idea to invest in a doggy life jacket for trips to the lakes.

2. Bust Out The Kiddie Pool

If your furry friend loves playing in water, now is a great time to dig the kiddie pool out of the garage. Fill the pool and let your fur baby splash around while you fire up the grill or relax on the patio with a cold drink.

3. Go Camping

This is a great time of year in Arizona to take your pet camping. Reserve a campsite online, pack your car, and you and Fido are ready to hit the road for a grand adventure! Evening temperatures in the spring are wonderful in this region—you and your dog can cuddle up in the tent for a cozy night.

4. Enjoy a Scenic Drive

If your pet enjoys car rides, take her on a scenic driving tour of your city or the countryside. Many dogs love the vibration of the car and the many sights to see out the window.

5. Take A Hike

Take your pet to check out one of the many beautiful hiking trails that Arizona has to offer. This is a great way to make sure your pet gets outside for some much-needed exercise. Just be sure to bring doggy boots to protect your dog’s feet from hot surfaces—and plenty of drinking water.

Have Fun while Staying Safe!

There is no need to stay cooped up in the house all spring! There are plenty of simple, fun, and safe socially-distanced pet activities for you to enjoy together. Our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert encourages you to get outside, enjoy the warming temperatures, get some exercise, and practice seasonal safety with your furry friend. Contact us online today to inquire about pet safety for warmer weather.

It’s June here in the Phoenix Valley, and that means we have entered full-blown summer desert temperatures. While a leisurely walk in the summer heat with your four-legged friend might seem harmless if proper precautions aren’t taken it could result in serious overheating for your pup. At Anasazi Animal Clinic, a local veterinary clinic in Gilbert AZ, we care dearly for your furry friends. For the sake of their health, we urge you to take the rising summer temperatures seriously.

Signs Your Dog is Overheating

It’s best to keep your dog indoors for the majority of the day during the hot summer months and take it out for activity only when the sun isn’t high in the sky (or, try taking it for a nighttime stroll). But it may not be so easy to keep your pet indoors all day, especially if you have an energetic, large canine breed. So, if you do take your pet out during the hotter part of the day we recommend being aware of their physical needs and their physical health.

If your dog or pet is outside and you notice any of the following symptoms, take it to your local veterinary clinic immediately:

Thick saliva

Heavy panting

Confusion

Dizziness

Seizures

Lack of movement

If you suspect your pup has overheated, it’s important to bring their temperature down slowly. An ice cold bath would reduce their temperature too quickly causing complications. Instead, try one of these suggestions.

Summer Tips for Going Out With Your Dog

It’s important to keep your pet active all year round. But to prevent dangerous situations for your dog in the summer heat, we’ve provided a few recommendations below:

Walk your dog in the early morning and evening hours. While mid-summer desert temperatures might still be warm at those times of day, the intensity of the sun won’t be as strong, and that will reduce the likelihood of overheating.

No matter the time of day, always put your hand on the pavement before you bring your dog out. If you can’t hold it for at least five seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s pads and could potentially burn their feet. Investing in a good pair of dog booties is also a great idea if their pads have to connect with hot concrete.

Always provide fresh, cool water for your dog. The risk of dehydration in your canine friend is high in the Arizona summer heat. If your dog has to be outdoors for part of the day, make sure he has plenty of shade and lots of water.

Cool your pet off with a hose or a child’s play pool. This is a fun treat for them that will help their body temperature stay cool.

If you have a pool, swimming is a good activity that won’t overheat your dog. However, just as you would with children, always be present and watch your pet while they are in the water.

Don’t hesitate to contact our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic if you have any concerns about summer care for your dog. In the event of overheating, the faster your pet gets attention, the better chance there is of helping him. As your local veterinary clinic in Gilbert AZ, we are here to help you keep your pet safe and healthy, especially during the hottest time of the year.

It’s the weekend, and the weather is lovely here in the metro-Phoenix area; a perfect time to get out and give yourself and your dog a little exercise. Anasazi Animal Clinic, located in Gilbert Arizona, knows the right kind of exercise is not only physically beneficial, but it’s also mentally and spiritually invigorating. If you’re tired of taking that same old walk around the neighborhood, perhaps the mountains are calling you to try a new walking trail. How about one of these dog-friendly trail hikes?

Phoenix Mountain Preserve: Shaw Butte

If you want to avoid the crowds that use many trails in the metro-Phoenix area, Shaw Butte is a perfect option for you and your four-legged friend. This Loop-trail is 3.8 miles long, climbs only 700 feet in elevation, and is excellent for beginners or experienced hikers. Enjoy beautiful views of North Mountain, Piestewa Peak, and Lookout Mountain, as well as downtown Phoenix.

Tres Rios Wetland

Tres Rios Wetland is a beautiful, 700-acre land conservation area that stretches almost 7 miles along the Salt, Gila, and Agua Fria Rivers. There is plenty of wildlife and local plant life to see and enjoy. Access Permits to the preserve are free, but you must obtain one in order to take a hike in its natural beauty. Click on the above link for more information.

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy: Lost Dog Wash

No need to be intimidated by the name of this trailhead. Lost Dog Wash is a gorgeous hike for your Fido and the whole family. Of the four different trails that are available at Lost Dog Wash, we recommend the Taliesin Overlook. It’s a four-mile round-trip trek with a gentle elevation gain of 350 feet, stunning views of the northwest, and a view of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Winter home.

South Mountain: Mormon Trailhead

Just about any trail on South Mountain is a fabulous choice, but this moderately challenging 5-mile loop climbs just over 1,000 feet in elevation and is quite a gem. It features wildflowers when in season, unique rock features, and beautiful views of the valley. It’s a great way to be outdoors and stretch your legs.

Whenever hiking with your dog, Anasazi Animal Clinic always recommends that you keep your dog on a leash, since the Phoenix leash laws apply on all hiking trails. And remember to bring plenty of water to keep you and your pooch hydrated. What are you waiting for? Grab that leash and water bottle, and take a short drive to enjoy exercise the natural way.

Modern dogs are the offspring of their ancient, wild ancestor, the wolf. From scavenging for food to defending their territory, dogs originally had extraordinarily active and social lifestyles. But as dogs were domesticated their daily routines became more sedentary. Certain types were bred to hunt or to work the farm for their master, but as a whole, domesticated dogs were relegated to become house pets, and their exercise was reduced to an occasional walk. At Anasazi Animal Clinic, we understand your dog is meant to be active, and without exercise and play, their health and well-being will suffer.

Results From Lack of Activity

When your dog stays inside all day long, he builds up energy, and without a release, he may begin to act out. Here are a few signs your dog may be begging for some exercise and play:

He is hyperactive, excitable, and active during nighttime hours

He acts in destructive ways, like scratching, digging, and chewing

He is overly curious and gets into trouble

He is too aggressive in its play with other dogs or humans and may bite

He is unruly, knocking things over and jumping on people

He displays attention-getting behaviors like barking and whining

Benefits of Exercise

Regular and appropriate activity can have tremendous health advantages for your dog. Here are a few of the benefits of exercising your pooch:

Calm unwanted behaviors (like those listed above)

Maintain muscular strength and agility

Keep the digestive system on track

Increase your bond—dogs are very social creatures and love to play!

Not All Dogs Were Created Equal

When it comes to exercise, the kind of activity you choose for your dog depends on age and breed. Smaller dogs with shorter legs won’t need as much exercise as larger, long-legged canine varieties. Breeds with flat noses can have trouble breathing and should not undertake too much extended or strenuous activity. Older dogs will require a more gentle walk or play.

Check out this link for some fun and creative ways to exercise your dog, and if you’re unsure whether a particular activity will be beneficial for your dog, don’t hesitate to ask one of our skilled veterinarians at Anasazi Animal Clinic. We love to see your pets happy and healthy!
