No matter how much you look forward to the 4th of July celebrations, your pets probably feel a lot differently. For you, it’s a fun summer holiday with barbecues, backyard get-togethers, and plenty of exciting fireworks displays to enjoy with family and friends. But for your pets, it’s full of dangers.

Why More Pets Go Missing During 4th of July Celebrations

The 4th of July holiday is also the time of year when the greatest number of pets go missing. Even the pets who seem most unlikely to roam can get frightened and bolt.

With more people coming and going from your home, there are more opportunities for pets to slip out of open gates or doors. And when pets get spooked by fireworks they might try to run away and hide.

Fireworks are loud and unpredictable, and they frighten pets with their suddenness and intensity. That feeling of panic pushes them to flee without thinking about where they’re going or how to get home, which is why they’re more likely to get lost.

How Fireworks Affect Pets

You already know your cats and dogs have really sensitive hearing—they can certainly hear treat packages crinkling from anywhere in the house! But having such sensitive ears means that the explosive sounds of fireworks may feel overwhelming to them, and the randomness of these big booming noises doesn’t give pets a break.

If their fight-or-flight response is triggered, you’ll see significant behavioral changes, like shaking, pacing, barking, or hiding. In extreme cases, your cat or dog may react with vomiting or diarrhea or make a determined effort to escape your home out of fear.

Just remember, these are completely normal reactions to stress, and there are things you can do to help your pets feel safe.

How to Keep Your Pets Safe During Holiday Fireworks

  • Keep your cats indoors at all times, not only during the times that fireworks are being set off, and
  • Walk your dogs early in the day, so they’re less exposed to the sights and sounds of fireworks.
  • Make sure your pets have a warm and welcoming place to find refuge in your home, including familiar bedding and toys. Consider using a white noise machine to mask disruptive noises.
  • Check that gates, screens, and doors are secure before your event begins.
  • Leave pets home when visiting local fireworks displays in parks and other open areas.
  • Make sure your pet’s collar ID tags are current and properly fitted.
  • Get your pets microchipped so that if they do escape your home, they could be returned to you more quickly if delivered to a shelter.
