Many pet owners wonder if a doggie day camp might help keep their dog from getting lonely or bored while they’re away. Depending upon your dog’s personality and comfort level, it might be just the thing. Whether it’s a couple hours, a half day or a full day, dogs get to play with day camp staff and other dogs, so that missing their family isn’t quite so stressful. From our professional viewpoint, it all depends on your dog. Some dogs do very well interacting with other dogs, while others are a bit more timid or just prefer to be on their own.
Just remember that when your dog is exercising and playing outside, they’re going need lots of fresh, clean water. While it is more critical during the hot summer months, water is necessary for your dog’s health all year round. Always keep a fresh, full bowl of water available for your pets no matter what time of year it is. You might also want to keep some bottled water and a bowl in your vehicle, just in case your pup is extra thirsty after day camp.
Especially here in the desert, providing enough water is a critical part of taking care of your dog. As a rule of thumb, dogs should drink one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. But this doesn’t mean they will always drink the same amount every day. There are a lot of factors that determine how much water your dog needs, including the outdoor temperature, their overall health, and how active they are. If your pet stops drinking, or isn’t drinking the amount for their activity level, contact us as soon as possible to make sure there isn’t a larger issue.
And if you do decide to send your dog to day camp, make sure they’re up-to-date on all their vaccinations. Shared water bowls are one of the easiest ways for diseases like bordetella to spread.
