Most of us already know how important physical exercise is for our dogs. But it remains pretty hot in Arizona this time of year—too hot for our furry canine friends to be out during the heat of the day. Since dogs need exercise several times a day, our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert has compiled this list of fun indoor exercises for dogs. We hope that these will provide you with a useful guide for incorporating enjoyable, simple, cheap exercise into your dog’s daily life.

Daily exercise not only keeps our fur babies lean, but it also helps to boost their immune systems, which protects against diseases like diabetes and cancer. Play also adds elements of fun and excitement to each day, a necessary part of a well-rounded dog life.

Play hide-and-seek

Believe it or not, with a little effort you can teach your dog to play this classic indoor game, which can stimulate some of his natural instincts like scent tracking. This also provides the opportunity to practice commands like wait, come, and okay while having fun with your dog. Here are some tips for teaching your dog.

Set up an obstacle course

You don’t need much to set up a fun and challenging obstacle course. Look around for things in your house that can be repurposed such as an old hula hoop for him to leap through or cushions to create a tunnel. Map everything out and lead your dog through the various obstacles, giving him healthy treats along the way. This game will challenge your dog both mentally and physically!

Play fetch on the stairs

Using the stairs is a great way to wear out your dog. The steps add an additional challenge to a dog’s workout, as they engage different muscles than those used on a regular walk or run and add an extra level of difficulty. Stand at the top of the stairs and throw a toy down to your dog. When your dog grabs the toy, call his name and have him bring the toy to you. After several rounds of this, he’ll be ready for a nap. Carpeted stairs are best since hardwood floors can be a bit slippery for your pooch’s paws.

Make Fido work for his treats

Take a variety of your dog’s favorite healthy treats and hide them around the house–behind doors, under tables, underneath rugs, etc. Your dog will be so busy tracking down his treats that he’ll get tired in the process. Treat-dispensing toys are another great way to keep your dog busy, engaging him physically and mentally.
