If you resolved to get more exercise this year, trying out new hiking trails is a great way to stick to your goals. Long walks are also a great way to help your dog stay fit and healthy—besides the exercise, they also get to smell new things and satisfy their need to explore. Fortunately, there are a lot of dog-friendly hiking trails in Gilbert and nearby where you can both enjoy the great outdoors together. Here are three of our favorite places for hiking with our dogs.
Three Dog-Friendly Hiking Areas in Gilbert
1. Riparian Preserve
If you live in Gilbert, you’re lucky, because you have the Riparian Preserve right on your doorstep. This wildlife sanctuary in the wetlands has a network of trails connecting its seven ponds, with endless opportunities to explore. The trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk. Dogs must be leashed, and of course, all waste must be carried out.
2. Arizona Canal Path
If wilderness hikes are not your style, try out the Arizona Canal Path that connects Glendale, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. Many sections of the trail are paved, so it’s easy for beginners. And there’s a lot to see, from public art and shopping in Scottsdale to scenic views of bridges and waterways all along the 18-mile canal. Trails are open year-round, and dogs must be leashed at all times.
3. Quail Run Park
If your dog needs more exercise than you do, there are plenty of dog parks in the area as well. Since Cosmo Dog Park will be closed for maintenance until the end of July, try out Quail Run Park in Mesa. There’s a huge off-leash area for dogs who have energy to burn, and plenty of room for leashed walks, as well in this 40-acre green space. The park is open from 6am to 10pm daily, but the dog run is closed on Thursdays and from 12-1 every day for cleaning.
