Whether you’ve seen your dog do it once or dozens of times, you might have wondered why they’re eating grass and whether it’s something you need to be concerned about. Eating grass is actually pretty common behavior in dogs. But occasionally, it can indicate a serious underlying problem. Our vets explain why dogs eat grass, why it might make them vomit afterwards, and the most common reasons for this kind of behavior.

Will Eating Grass Make My Dog Sick?

Most dogs do eat grass occasionally, for a variety of reasons. If dogs are left outside for a long period of time, eating grass could be their solution to boredom or anxiety. Younger dogs might try to eat grass as a way of exploring the world around them. Or they might need a little more fiber in their diet.

Researchers think this behavior may be instinctual. Your dog’s wild ancestors most likely consumed plant matter found in the stomachs of their prey, or habitually ate grass as a natural source of fiber.

Why Do Dogs Vomit After Eating Grass?

However, your dog might be eating grass because they have an upset stomach. Most dogs are not sick before eating grass. Like cats, they eat grass on purpose to induce vomiting. If your dog is already feeling sick, they might eat grass to jump-start vomiting in hopes of making themselves feel better.

Your dog might chew on grass because they’re feeling nauseous from:

  • Eating something they shouldn’t have
  • Food allergies or sensitivities
  • Gastritis (upset stomach)
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pesticides or other chemicals sprayed on the grass

If vomiting is rare and your dog acts normal after nibbling on grass, then there’s nothing to worry about. However, frequent grass eating along with vomiting could be a sign of serious illness. Contact your vet promptly if your dog shows signs of lethargic behavior, fever, dehydration, or extreme changes in appetite.
