Celebrating spring holidays like Easter and Mother’s Day often includes buying flowers. But did you know that some of the most popular spring flowers are poisonous to cats? Daffodils and Easter lilies are highly toxic to cats, and they could even be deadly. So before you purchase a bouquet for your home (or for someone with a cat) check to make sure that none of the flowers are dangerous.

Why Are Lilies So Dangerous to Cats?

Lilies contain a chemical that causes kidney failure in cats. All types of lilies are poisonous: lilies of the valley, day lilies, tiger lilies, stargazer lilies, Easter lilies, and any other variety you might come across.

Not only that, every single part of the plant is dangerous. The stems, leaves, petals, roots, and even the pollen are all toxic. So is the water in a vase of cut lilies. If your cat laps the water, bites a leaf, or brushes up against some lilies and then licks the pollen off of their fur while grooming, they could get poisoned.

Symptoms of Lily Toxicity in Cats

If your cat has had any potential contact with lilies, keep a close eye out for symptoms of poisoning. Symptoms may include:

Exhaustion

Drooling

Vomiting

Increased urination

Loss of appetite

Symptoms will start within 12 hours of ingestion, and kidney damage will begin at about the same time. If your cat shows any signs of lily toxicity, go to an emergency vet immediately. Without prompt treatment, the kidney damage will be irreversible and fatal.

Which Other Spring Flowers Are Toxic to Cats?

Besides lilies, you need to keep your cat away from other dangerous plants and flowers like:

Daffodils

Tulips

Hyacinths

Crocuses

Chrysanthemums

Daisies

Sago Palms

Azaleas

Pet Poison Prevention

It’s important to be aware that pets respond differently than humans to many types of substances. Remember to use pet-friendly cleaning supplies, and to keep things like chocolate, toothpaste, medications out of your pet’s reach.

When it comes to cats and flowers, proceed with caution. Always double-check to make sure that the flowers you choose for your home and garden are safe for cats. Some varieties of houseplants can be poisonous as well, so make sure any potted plants you purchase are safe for cats.

Dogs are naturally curious and playful, and they often stick their noses where they don’t belong. But if your pup bites or paws at a busy bee, or goes exploring a little too close to a hive, they could get stung.

Although bee stings usually aren’t life-threatening for dogs, they can still cause a good deal of discomfort as well as allergic reactions. Knowing what to do if your dog gets stung by a bee will help you stay calm, act quickly, and handle the situation effectively.

How to Tell If Your Dog Was Stung

If you didn’t actually see a bee sting your dog, it can be difficult to know what’s wrong. If your dog is acting upset, remember to check for symptoms of stings. Bee stings can cause the following symptoms in dogs:

Biting at the place they were stung

Limping

Swelling

Pawing at face

Coughing or gagging

Constantly licking lips

Difficulty breathing

Vomiting or diarrhea

Drooling

Whining

Hives

What to Do If Your Dog Gets Stung by a Bee

If you do see your dog get stung by a bee, it’s crucial to stay calm and be prepared to keep a close eye on them for the whole day. While symptoms usually appear within 30-60 minutes after being stung, they can sometimes take hours to develop. That’s why it’s a good idea to always have a pet first-aid kit handy.

If your dog was stung, it’s normal for them to experience some swelling and minor discomfort. However, if your dog swallowed the bee or got stung inside the mouth, they may show more concerning symptoms.

Can Dogs Be Allergic to Bees?

An allergic reaction to a sting in the mouth or throat can cause swelling that blocks the airways, leading to coughing, wheezing, drooling, or gagging. And swallowing the bee could lead to vomiting or diarrhea, which can cause dehydration. See your emergency vet right away if you notice any of these symptoms.

No matter where your dog got stung, it’s always important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction. Weakness, hives anywhere on the body, and/or significant swelling that extends beyond the sting site can indicate an adverse reaction.

In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction can also lead to anaphylactic shock. Signs of this life-threatening reaction include:

Pale gums

Cold legs

Seizures

Drooling

Coma

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if you suspect your dog is having any kind of allergic reaction.

How to Treat a Dog Bee Sting

1. Remove the Stinger

Bees leave their stingers in their victims, so they can continue to distribute venom and cause irritation for some time afterward. If you can see a stinger in the wound, carefully and gently remove it with tweezers. Just avoid using tweezers that have pointed tips, because they might squeeze more venom out of the stinger.

2. Apply a Soothing Paste

You can help relieve your dog’s pain after being stung by applying a soothing paste to the site—made by mixing 1 part baking soda with 1 part water. An oatmeal bath may be a better option if your dog has multiple stings.

3. Apply an Ice pack

Applying an ice pack wrapped in a soft towel for 10 minutes at a time will help reduce swelling. If your dog has multiple stings and large areas of swelling, a cool towel can help instead.

4. Prevent Scratching

It’s important to keep your dog from irritating the wound. Biting, licking, or scratching at the sting site can interfere with healing and may lead to infection. An anti-scratch recovery dog collar or a cone can help protect the wound while it heals.

5. Make Sure Your Dog Eats and Drinks

Your dog needs to stay hydrated and eat well in order to heal. Make sure that your dog drinks plenty of fresh water. If your dog was stung on the mouth, give them dry food softened with water to make it easier to eat, but avoid wet food. Although wet food is also easy to eat, it’s actually harder on the stomach.

The vets at Anasazi Animal Clinic are always here for you if your pet needs medical attention, but it never hurts to know some basic first aid. What if you’re on a wilderness hike with your dog and they get hurt? Or what if your cat gets wounded in the middle of night and you need to care for them until our veterinary clinic opens in the morning?

For small emergencies, we highly suggest that if you have pets you keep a basic first aid kit on hand. Just like the first aid kit you have for yourself, a pet first aid kit provides basic medical supplies to help pets stay comfortable until you can get them to a veterinarian.

What to Put in a Pet First Aid Kit

To get you started, we made a list of ten priority items to place in your pet first aid kit. After you assemble a basic kit, add any other supplies you feel are helpful, depending on how many pets you have and on their individual needs. Then keep the kit in a safe place where you can reach it quickly, and bring it with you whenever you travel with your pets.

1: Emergency Information

Keep a card inside your pet first aid kit listing:

The names and ages of your animals, as well as any known medical issues and their last vaccinations

Your veterinarian’s name and phone number

The Animal Poison Control Center phone number

Contact information for 24-hour emergency veterinarians where you live and any places you frequently travel to

We also suggest making copies of this card to give to your pet sitter or boarding facility, and also keeping one in your wallet in case your kit becomes lost or damaged.

2: Current Medications

If your pet is on any medications, keep a small quantity in the first aid kit. They might come in handy if you are traveling and your pet’s medicine gets lost or stolen. To make sure a prescription never runs out unexpectedly, sign up for auto shipping from our online pharmacy.

3: Pet Bandage Wraps

Keep a roll of bandages specially designed for pets. Use them to bandage a wound until you can get to a veterinarian. You can buy them online or at your favorite pet store.

4: Gauze and Cotton Balls

These two items are staples for any pet first aid kit. Gauze helps to stop bleeding and can act as an impromptu bandage if needed. Cotton balls can be used to assist with cleaning wounds or for applying pressure to stop bleeding.

5: Blunt-Tipped Scissors

You will need to be able to cut gauze and pet bandages to size, so keep a pair of blunt-tipped scissors in your kit. Because they do not have sharp points, they are a safer option for storage and for use around pets.

6: Antibiotic Wipes and Disposable Gloves

If your pet gets wounded, using antibiotic wipes before placing a bandage helps lower the risk of infection. You can also use antibiotic wipes to clean your hands before treating a wound. And for even more protection against germs, keep a pair of disposable gloves in your pet first aid kit so that you won’t transfer any bacteria from your hands to the wound.

7: Water

Always keep a bottle of drinking water in your pet’s first aid kit for emergency hydration. You can also use it to clean wounds, flush toxins from your pet’s fur or skin, or cool them down if they become overheated.

8: Muzzle, Leash, and/or Carrier

Just in case your dog loses or breaks a leash, it’s good to keep an extra one in the kit. You should also keep a muzzle in your kit to ensure your dog does not accidentally bite you if you need to administer first aid. Also, consider having a small carrier handy for cats in case of an emergency.

9: Blanket

A small blanket provides a bit of comfort and a soft place for your pet to lie down if you need to administer first aid. Additionally, it acts as a temporary restraint for cats and small dogs if needed.

10: Waterproof Case

Keep all your first aid supplies in a case that is brightly colored and waterproof. This makes it easier to quickly find your kit when you need it, makes it more convenient to bring with you wherever you go, and keeps the supplies inside safe from spills and leaks.

First Aid for Pets in Gilbert, Arizona

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to put together a basic pet first aid kit. We also suggest setting a calendar reminder to restock your first aid kit every six months, to make sure you always have supplies at the ready in case of an emergency. If you ever do have a veterinary emergency, call Anasazi Animal Clinic at 480-497-0505 and bring your pet in for an urgent examination.

Here at Anasazi Animal Clinic, we have seen an increase in pets being rushed to our office after eating something containing xylitol. Because this substance is toxic and potentially deadly to animals, we want to make sure everyone knows what xylitol is and the symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs and cats.

What is xylitol?

Xylitol is an alcohol that naturally occurs in a variety of vegetables and fruits. Over the past few years, xylitol has become a popular sugar substitute in candy, sugar-free gum, and mints. It can also be found in commercial baked goods, drink powders, barbecue sauces, sugar-free desserts, and peanut butter. However, its most common use is in oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

What are the signs of xylitol poisoning in dogs and cats?

While xylitol is completely safe for humans, the opposite is true for dogs and cats. The smallest amount of xylitol can be toxic and even deadly to pets.

When a cat or dog eats xylitol, their liver signals the pancreas to release insulin. This results in a rapid drop in blood sugar, causing hypoglycemia. Once ingested, xylitol can lower a pet’s blood sugar in just 10 to 60 minutes. This rapid drop in blood sugar can cause a dog or cat to go into liver failure, causing a coma or even death.

Symptoms of xylitol poisoning include:

Loss of energy

No appetite

Vomiting and/or diarrhea

Poor coordination

Shaking or seizures

How do you treat xylitol poisoning?

If your cat or dog ingested xylitol, it is a veterinary emergency.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something containing xylitol, you should immediately bring them to a veterinarian for a thorough examination and bloodwork. The veterinarian will also be able to closely monitor your pet’s blood sugar levels over a one- to two-day period for any signs of hypoglycemia. They will also administer medications to help protect your pet’s liver and treat any existing symptoms.

Educating Pet Owners in Gilbert, Arizona

While xylitol is a safe, natural sweetener for human consumption, it is 100% poison to pets. We hope this article helps make pet owners in Gilbert and Chandler aware of the dangers of xylitol poisoning in dogs and cats.

If you ever suspect your pet has eaten something containing xylitol and it is after clinic hours, we urge you to call the Animal Poison Control Hotline at (888) 426-4435.

And then make sure to contact Anasazi Animal Clinic for a follow-up visit or if it is during clinic hours.

Owning a pet can be expensive! In 2021, Americans spent nearly $140 billion on their pets, including food, products, services, and veterinary care. The majority of pet owners consider their four-legged friend a member of the family, and they will do anything they can to provide their pet with the veterinary care they need.

At Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert and Chandler, we understand how both regular medical check-ups and unexpected emergency situations can take a toll on our clients. We are proud to be part of the group of vets that take CareCredit as a payment option.

What Is CareCredit?

CareCredit offers an alternative option to pet insurance if that is not an option for your family. CareCredit is a credit card that can be used to pay for any health and wellness services not covered by insurance. You can use CareCredit to pay for health services for your human family members as well as veterinary services for your pets.

What Can I Pay for Using CareCredit?

Vets that take CareCredit will accept it as a payment for both routine and emergency veterinary procedures. You can use CareCredit to pay for:

Annual check-ups, teeth cleanings, vaccinations, and microchipping

Treatment for pet diseases, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation

Prescription pet foods you buy from your veterinarian

Emergency pet care

Surgeries, including spaying or neutering

How Does CareCredit Work?

Applying for CareCredit is easy—it only takes about five minutes. You can apply online, through the CareCredit app, or by phone. You can also stop by the Gilbert location of Anasazi Animal Clinic and we will walk you through the process. CareCredit will instantly let you know if you qualify for credit or not. Once approved, you can use your CareCredit card to pay for your veterinary fees.

CareCredit does not have an annual fee, and it works much like a typical credit card. You can use the monthly payment calculator on their website to find out what your veterinary service payments would total each month. CareCredit offers a variety of payment options—some with interest, some without—depending on how much you charge to your card, and how long it takes you to pay off the full amount.

Vets That Accept CareCredit Near Me

Looking for vets that take CareCredit in Gilbert or Chandler? Anasazi Animal Clinic is ready to answer any questions you may have regarding this unique payment option.

Mold is often undetectable to the human eye, but can have serious effects on people and pets. This silent threat can creep up with no visible symptoms, forcing you to rely solely on smell and physical reactions. It can be easier to detect mold exposure in humans, because you may develop allergy-like symptoms. However, when it comes to mold and dogs or cats, you have to trust your intuition about whether they’ve been exposed to mold.

The feeling when your pet is having an “off” day can possibly be a sign of infection caused by mold exposure. That’s why it’s important to keep tabs on your pets’ typical behavior, dietary habits, and any changes in their sleeping patterns. Here’s how to tell if your pet is experiencing mold exposure symptoms.

Different Types of Mold

There are three different types of mold: allergenic, pathogenic, and toxigenic. Each type is more dangerous than the one before. As the names indicate, allergenic mold produces allergy-like symptoms. Pathogenic mold produces symptoms of acute illness. Toxigenic mold produces toxic substances that can cause deadly health conditions.

5 Signs of Mold Exposure In Dogs

When dogs inhale enough of a certain type of mold, it can cause serious health problems. Symptoms of mold exposure in dogs include:

Difficulty breathing

Wheezing, sneezing, or coughing

Nasal discharge

Lethargy

Nose and/or mouth bleeding

8 Signs of Mold Exposure In Cats

Cats aren’t as quick to show how they’re feeling as dogs. This makes it harder to distinguish between typical standoffish behavior and sickness. Any variance in your cat’s behavior could be the difference between a severe mold reaction and a bad day.

Symptoms of mold sickness in cats may include:

Excessive sleeping

Hiding

Decreased appetite

Excessive scratching or licking

Hair loss or bald patches

Coughing or sneezing

Runny nose or eyes

Wheezing sound when breathing

Treatment for Mold Exposure

Veterinary treatment for mold exposure is usually centered on supportive care which focuses on managing the more urgent symptoms. Treatment for respiratory issues, vomiting, gastric distress, and dehydration can help your pet make a full recovery.

Even if your pet’s condition is not life-threatening, the vets at Anasazi Animal Clinic are available for urgent care. If your pet’s condition feels severe enough to where you can’t wait for a scheduled appointment, please contact us right away.

Mold Prevention

It’s especially important to monitor your pet’s bedding and toys for mold, especially when living in a humid environment. When the air quality is inconsistent, it’s safest to store your pet’s food in air-tight containers to avoid mold contamination.

Plastic or rubber chew toys should also be checked for water damage, especially if they are around mud or left on the floor. Cleaning toys regularly and making sure they’re completely dry is the most efficient way to prevent mold from entering toys with holes.

Schedule a Wellness Exam Today

Mold exposure in dogs and cats is a common but preventable issue. If your pet is experiencing discomfort associated with mold exposure, please contact us right away. At Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert, we will treat your pets with the utmost care. We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of your furry friends.

Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a medical emergency and is fatal for about 30% of the dogs it affects. Our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert wants to educate you about this dangerous condition because many dog owners have never heard of it. We hope you and your pup never have to go through this scary ordeal, but learning about what GDV is, signs to look for, and the possible causes may help your dog survive. Read on for common questions about bloat in dogs and what you can do to prevent it.

What is bloat in dogs?

GDV is a deadly stomach condition, in which the stomach fills with air, food, or fluid, causing the stomach to flip and cutting off the blood supply to the stomach. As pressure builds in the stomach, blood flow to the heart may also be blocked, sending the dog into shock. GDV develops very quickly, without warning, and is always fatal if left untreated.

What causes bloat?

Vets aren’t sure exactly what causes bloat in dogs, but the following factors can increase a dog’s chances of experiencing it:

Eating from a raised food bowl

Having only one meal a day

Eating quickly

Heavy running or playing after eating

Genetic relation to dogs that have had bloat

Overeating or drinking

Stress or anxiety

Certain breeds are also at a higher risk of suffering from bloat, especially large, deep-chested breeds like boxers, German shepherds, Great Danes, Gordon setters, Irish setters, Weimaraners, St. Bernards, Doberman pinschers, and standard poodles. Male dogs are also at a higher risk than females.

What are the signs of bloat in dogs?

Initial signs include:

Acting restless or pacing

Drooling

Distended abdomen

Appearing anxious

Looking at their stomach

Retching with nothing coming up

Abdominal pain

Without treatment, your dog will go into shock quickly (1-2 hours). Signs of shock include collapsing, pale gums, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath. If you think your dog might have bloat, get him into a clinic immediately.

How is bloat treated?

Treating bloat in dogs depends on the severity of the condition. If your dog is in shock, he will be stabilized with IV fluids. The vet will deflate your dog’s stomach to release the pressure buildup and take X-rays to determine whether or not the stomach has flipped. If it has, your dog will be taken into emergency surgery to correct the position and to attach the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from happening again.

It is important to note that GDV must be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian right away—do not attempt to treat it at home or wait it out. There is no conservative, “wait-and-see” approach when it comes to bloat because without veterinary treatment, it is always deadly. But the good news is that, with prompt treatment, 70-80% of dogs survive. That is why educating yourself about the signs and symptoms of bloat is so important.

How can you prevent bloat in dogs?

Again, the exact cause is unknown, but the following measures may reduce your dog’s risk of developing bloat or lessen the severity of it:

Feed your dog smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.

Avoid strenuous exercise or playing for 1-2 hours after eating a meal.

Don’t use a raised food bowl unless your vet has recommended it.

Reduce stress and anxiety for your dog.

Slow down your dog’s eating.

Don’t let your dog drink large amounts of water at one time.

Have a gastropexy performed—this is a preventative surgery that many owners of large breeds opt to have done while their dog is young. It prevents the stomach from twisting in 95% of bloat cases.

A major health concern in cats as they age is kidney failure. Kidney disease affects roughly 1/3 of aging cats. Although cats often don’t show many signs of being in pain, there are various ways to assess if your pet is experiencing decreased kidney functioning. We at Anasazi Animal Clinic in Gilbert are committed to providing compassionate pet care. Below is a brief description of what to expect if you have concerns about your pet and their kidney health, so you can make the most informed decision to keep your pet healthy.

What are the types of kidney issues?

There are two different types of kidney failure in cats: acute kidney (renal) failure (ARF) and chronic kidney (renal) failure. Acute kidney failure is a sudden occurrence of kidney failure. It is often reversible when it is diagnosed early and treated aggressively. Chronic kidney failure is the loss of functioning of the kidneys gradually over months or years. This can lead to total kidney failure. Both can be fatal if left untreated.

What are signs of kidney failure in cats?

The function of the kidneys is to filter impurities out of the blood and pass them through the urinary tract. A decrease in the functioning of the kidneys can create waste buildup which will make your pet feel ill. Signs your cat may be experiencing kidney failure can include:

Drinking more water

Frequent urination

Weight loss

Bad breath

Lethargy

Constipation

Vomiting, diarrhea, bloody stool

Brown tongue

Mouth ulcers

Loss of appetite

What can a veterinarian do?

Your veterinarian can provide blood and urine tests, and X-rays. An ultrasound or biopsy may be needed to make a diagnosis. If your vet does find signs of kidney disease, treatments can range from surgery to an altered diet along with medication. This will vary depending on the stage of failure and the type of kidney disease your cat has been diagnosed with. You may also be given the option to inject fluids under your cat’s skin at home depending on the recommendation of your vet.

What can you do?

If you are at all concerned that your cat may be having kidney issues, take them to a vet immediately. Bringing your pet to a veterinarian early is the most important thing you can do to prevent your cat from being in prolonged pain. After your pet has been seen, the veterinarian will help you decide the best care plan.

Give us a call!

At Anasazi Animal Clinic, your local Gilbert vet, we understand how stressful it can be when your pet is in pain. If you are concerned about your cat’s kidney functioning, bring them in as soon as possible. You can reach us through any option on the contact us page. The sooner we can diagnose and treat, the sooner your cat will be back on the road to good health!

At Anasazi Animal Clinic (serving Gilbert, Mesa, and Chandler, AZ) we know your pet’s health is just as important as the rest of the family’s health. We know because we feel the same way about our pets. That’s why you might be asking, “Is pet insurance the right choice for me?”

What is Pet Insurance?

The concept of pet insurance surfaced in the United States in 1982. Similar to some human health insurance plans, pet insurance typically requires full payment in advance for any services done, and then submission of invoices for reimbursement. Depending upon the type of plan, reimbursement might be partial or full.

Each insurance plan varies, but as a whole pet insurance often covers accidents and illnesses, and may even cover preventive or wellness care. If you are looking for a base plan, be sure to include accidents and illnesses, congenital and hereditary conditions, cancer, and chronic diseases.

Is It Right For Me?

You may be considering health insurance for your pet because they are ill, or you may just want to be prepared for the future since health care can be one of the most costly aspects of owning a four-legged friend. There’s no question pet health care costs can add up, especially if your pet has a chronic illness or requires surgery. With current medical and technological advances in pet health care, you will want to take advantage of the opportunity to diagnose and treat conditions early.

When your pet is young and healthy, pet health insurance may not be on your mind. But we recommend getting pet insurance early on in the life of your pet since pre-existing conditions are taken into consideration when applying. If you wait until your pet is aging or sick to consider insurance, you might have trouble finding a good plan that fits your needs. While there are a few insurance companies that will take senior pets or pets with chronic illnesses, the list is short.

Choosing A Plan

As with anything, it’s always a good idea to do your research on the various pet insurance plans out there. There are a variety of options and coverages available, and depending on the current health of your pet, or your particular concerns, you want to know what will be covered. We suggest you create a list of what’s most important to you regarding your pet’s health and work from there to find the right plan.

Once you’ve chosen a few of plans that match your most important concerns, it’s time to give the providers a call. Contacting a providing insurance company to get all the plan details, including the fine print, is a smart idea that will help narrow your options until you’ve discovered the plan that best suits your family and pet.

For a more comprehensive overview of the ins and outs of pet insurance, check out a valuable online resource called 365 Pet Insurance. And if you’re looking for an experienced and compassionate animal clinic, we are confident you’ll be happy with our team at Anasazi Animal Clinic.
